Walsall comment: Danny Johnson's return is a statement of intent
The sight of a smiling Danny Johnson holding a Walsall scarf aloft has transformed the mood of the Saddlers’ fan base overnight, writes George Bennett.
Johnson scored 15 goals across all competitions during a memorable loan spell at Bescot in the first half of last season.
The 30-year-old marked his debut with a hat-trick against Hartlepool United, and notched seven in his opening eight matches.
But there was always a fear that Walsall could be stripped of their main marksman midway through the campaign, and those concerns were confirmed when Johnson returned to Mansfield Town, once his loan expired in January.
He scored 40 per cent of Walsall’s 30 league goals over the course of their first 24 matches, and signed off his loan with a goal in a 1-1 draw at Tranmere Rovers.
