Walsall fans are keen on Steve Coppell
Steve Coppell has proved a favourite among Walsall fans as he still leads the betting odds to become the next head coach.
The former Crystal Palace manager has been a 1/2 favourite among bookmakers for 48 hours now after his odds were slashed following the departure of Brian Dutton.
An Express & Star poll has found that 82 per cent of Saddlers supporters would welcome his appointment, with only 18 per cent of the 720 that took part saying no.
If appointed, the 65-year-old will bring 35 years of managerial experience, having previously taken charge of Manchester City, Brentford, Brighton and Reading – among others.
His last job in the UK, however, was in 2010 when he spent only four months at Bristol City – meaning he has not managed on these shores for more than a decade. Coppell does have links with technical director Jamie Fullarton, who played under him at Palace, and with a swift appointment required by chairman Leigh Pomlett, Coppell may fit the bill.
Among the other favourites with the bookies are John McGreal and Dave Reddington.
