Brian Dutton: Consistency is key for Walsall next season
Brian Dutton insists members of his Walsall squad have potential to succeed next season but that consistency amongst the group is of paramount importance.
The Saddlers have endured a disappointing campaign towards the bottom end of the table with long win-less runs hampering their season.
With some impressive youth players giving fans hope for the future, Dutton believes striking the right balance is key.
He said: “At Walsall this season we have the most inexperienced EFL squad, with the least amount of career starts in the EFL. What you’ve got with a group like that is guys learning on the job and giving their all to try and represent the football club as best they can.
“It’s difficult for them to perform week in week out with consistency because we’re the most inexperienced squad out of the 24 in the league.
“There’s a lot of potential in the squad. Guys in the beginning of their careers who are hopefully going to have long, successful careers in the EFL but they’re just starting out on that journey. We’ve seen the glimpses but Walsall deserves consistency and that’s something that, next season, will be important to have.”
Meanwhile, he expects to have more ‘clarity’ on his own future in the coming weeks.
He added: “I assume until after the Carlisle fixture and when the dust settles, we’ll then have more clarity.”
