Exclusive: Brian Dutton looks set to see out Walsall season
Brian Dutton is set to take charge of Walsall’s final two games of the season despite uncertainty around his future, the Express & Star understands.
The 36-year-old seemed destined to leave the club this week after calling for clarity over his position following the club’s 2-0 win over Scunthorpe United on Saturday.
He also hinted that game could be his last in charge and with no official statement on his role given by the club, supporters have been left wondering whether he will take charge of the team against Morecambe this week. Now, it is understood the head coach will continue in his job for the final two fixtures of the League Two season.
Dutton originally signed a deal until the end of the campaign when he took over from Darrell Clarke in February.
He has made no secret of wanting the job long-term and has been hopeful of securing a new deal. Although he is now set to stay on for two more weeks, it is also understood that his future beyond this campaign is still uncertain – as he said following last week’s win.
Chairman Leigh Pomlett has been a big supporter of Dutton since he took the job and stood by him when the club came perilously close to relegation trouble.
He may yet decide to offer Dutton a new contract but with technical director Jamie Fullarton now looking after the football side of things at the Banks’s Stadium, they may also choose to go in another direction. Dutton has only managed three wins in 18 since taking charge, to the frustration of many supporters, but he has also championed youth and brought through impressive midfielder Sam Perry.
