Boss Brian Dutton blasts Walsall

Brian Dutton has blasted the ‘brain-dead football’ his Walsall side produced in midweek as he calls on the players to take more responsibility.

The Saddlers were toothless in attack on Tuesday night as they crawled to a 0-0 draw against Southend United.

The hosts had been reduced to 10 men, too, but Walsall could not fashion a single shot in the second half.

“It was brain-dead football,” Dutton said. “They’re down to 10 men and we needed to work the ball more, make more passes, create overloads and then create opportunities.

“We did the opposite, we were direct and played Sunday league, pub football and played into their hands.

“All brawn, no brains.”

When asked if the players need to take some responsibility for the club’s position, Dutton added: “When you pick the same team that showed up so well against Bolton, other than two changes, it’s very hard for me to keep coming out and taking it on the chin and all the criticism.

“The players need to stand up and be counted.

“Until that changes, we will suffer. We have to dust ourselves down, understand what has happened and learn from it. Prepare for the next game.

“But make no bones about it, I am not pleased with the players.”
