The 19-year-old has started two of Walsall’s last three games and came off the bench in the other fixture.

That experience is his first in the Football League, after earning his professional debut in the EFL Trophy last season.

Darrell Clarke regularly spoke about giving Perry an opportunity in League Two this season but it was not until Dutton took over that the chance came and the midfielder is grateful to his new boss

“It’s been brilliant,” Perry said.

“For the gaffer to put his trust into me and start those two games against two good teams in good form. When I am on the pitch I want to keep playing well and hopefully keep my shirt.

“It’s been a hard season from the start of pre-season to now. I’m just starting to get into the team and obviously I need to keep my shirt and keep playing well.”

Perry was released from Villa as a 16-year-old but has quickly made a name for himself with the Saddlers.

When asked if he now wants to repay the club, he added: “Definitely.

“For the club to put their trust in me after I got released by Villa, it’s been amazing. I have to keep going now and keep working hard.”
