The 28-year-old made his first start since November last week and on Tuesday night also scored his first goal since November.

That strike took him to five for the season and he is now looking to build on that as he fights to regain a regular starting spot following the sale of Elijah Adebayo.

“I want to be the main striker for this team, I’ve always wanted that,” Lavery said. “I thought I finished last season quite well and now I want to push on. I want to score goals for this team.

“I want us to do well collectively. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.

“There are other strikers here though so I will have to stay on my toes and keep the shirt if I have it.”

When asked if Brian Dutton coming in as manager will be a fresh start for him, Lavery added: “Yeah potentially for everyone, not just myself.

“The manager has been here for the last year-and-a-half like we all have but now it’s a fresh guy in charge with fresh ideas. I think it’s a new start for every single player if I’m honest.”
