New Walsall boss Brian Dutton saw positive signs with his team’s second half response but was disappointed with their first half defending in the 2-1 loss to Cheltenham.

After 24 hours of preparation time since Dutton took over the Saddlers raced into a lead after four minutes through Caolan Lavery.

A mistake from Dan Scarr then let the Robins back into the game with an equaliser before they added a second before the break.

Walsall saw more of the ball in the second half but failed to break down Michael Duff’s side and although Dutton saw positive glimpses, he wants more.

“It was a game of two halves,” Dutton said.

“We got the early goal but Cheltenham dominated the first half with the possession. We found it difficult to get a good press on them, which allowed them territory into our half.

“I didn’t think they were causing us many problems with the territory they managed to get but we’ve given them a goal and poor defending for the second one.

“I’m disappointed with the goals we conceded. Disappointed that we weren’t more aggressive out of possession in the first half but delighted with the response second half.”

Goalscorer Lavery added: “It’s always disappointing to lose football matches.

“We’ve started to play in a different style, so it’s going to take a little bit of time, but the boys are all looking forward to working with the new gaffer.

“We’re disappointed but there’s some positives to build on.”
