Darrell Clarke: George Nurse loss 'unfortunate'
Darrell Clarke has described the loss of George Nurse as ‘unfortunate’ after he was recalled by Bristol City.
The loanee suffered from injuries during his time at Walsall but impressed when he did get on the pitch.
Despite his fitness issues Walsall wanted to keep the 21-year-old.
“It wasn’t mutual, Bristol City wanted him back,” Clarke said.
“They had a release clause and they wanted him back because they’ve got injuries at left-back. They also recalled Cameron Pring who was with us last year.
“He’s had a hamstring injury and ruled out so George has gone back, which is unfortunate.
“Nursey, by his own admission, will be disappointed that he didn’t get as many minutes as he could. He struggled with one of two injuries. He’s a really talented left-back, we’ve seen that in the games that he’s played for us. His goal against Bradford was a special goal.
“His attitude was superb, similar to Cameron Pring’s, and Rory Holden’s who’s now with us permanently.
“We have a good relationship (with Bristol City) but they called him back, it wasn’t mutual.”
With Zak Jules and Callum Cockerill-Mollett fit again, the Saddlers have two good left-back options.
But when asked if Clarke will target a replacement for Nurse before the transfer deadline, he was coy with the details.
“We have Cockerill-Mollett and Jules but like I said, let’s discuss where we’re at after the window shuts,” he added.
“We’ve brought in three loans and we’re very thankful to the clubs that allowed us to bring those loans in.
“We’ll see what develops.”
