Walsall 0 Carlisle 2 - Player ratings
See how we rated the Walsall players in their defeat to Carlisle.
Liam Roberts
First start in almost six weeks and his distribution early on looked rusty. Missed a key cross in the second half but also took several others and made crucial first half save from Josh Kayode. No chance with either goal.
5
Cameron Norman
Was dragged inside for Carlisle’s first but made a vital block to deny a second. Got forward when he could and teed up Gordon for a first half header.
5
Dan Scarr
A big battle for Walsall at the back and Scarr was up for it, with a fantastic second half goal-line clearance keeping his team in it. First half slip did lead to a Carlisle chance but he also delivered a tremendous raking crossfield pass for Adebayo in the second half.
6
James Clarke
It was a difficult afternoon for all in the Walsall defence given Carlisle’s attacking threat and direct approach. Clarke stood up to the physical test but like all of the back-line will be disappointed by both the goals conceded.
5
Mat Sadler
First league start in two months and the player/coach gave his all amid a tough test.. One key interception when Walsall were a goal down. Withdrawn on the hour.
5
Alfie Bates
Filling the ‘quarterback’ role in front of the back four and never shied away from getting on the ball and trying to spray long-range passes. Booked in the second half and taken off shortly after.
5
Josh Gordon
Worked extremely hard whether out on the right or up against the physical Carlisle defence up top. Only given half chances – a looping header and left foot shot which were both wide of the target - and was booked when his frustrations at not getting a free kick ran away with him.
6
Stuart Sinclair
First league start in over two months and it was the usual Sinclair, never hiding and flying into challenges. Has stayed patient and will be keen for more opportunities.
6
Liam Kinsella
Probably Walsall’s best performer on a difficult day. Tried to get Walsall going whether with a strong challenge, a forward break or trying to pick a pass. Impressive.
7
Wes McDonald
Difficult to fully assess as wasn’t involved as much as he would no doubt have liked. But when he was, looked Walsall’s chief threat. First half effort hit the side netting and mazy second half run drew a save out of Carlisle’s keeper.
6
Elijah Adebayo
Not a great afternoon for a centre forward when handed so little service. Kept at it and was a willing outlet but never given a chance. Got back to do his defensive work as well.

Substitutes
George Nurse (for Sadler, 60) - 5
More minutes in the tank as he returns from injury and strained every sinew to try and stop the pass which led to the second goal..
Danny Guthrie (for Bates, 60) - 5
A busy presence and tried to keep the ball moving.
Jake Scrimshaw (for Sinclair, 60) - 5
Lively from the off and almost fashioned an opening only for a loose touch to allow the defender to step in.
Emmanuel Osadebe (for Norman, 81) - N/A
Subs not used: Rose, White, Lavery.
