James Clarke: Walsall have learned from last season
Walsall captain James Clarke believes the squad has learned from last season’s losing streak as they embark on a winning run of late.
October 2019 became notorious with Saddlers fans after their team lost six League Two fixtures in a row.
After a poor run this season Walsall have responded with back-to-back victories and Clarke insists the young team has matured in the past year.
“Last year was a tough one when everything was going against us – and we were playing badly as well.
“This year we might have had a sticky patch and the odd not great game, but we have performed reasonably well in most games.
“In that respect we’ve improved. We’ve improved and learned from it. It’s quite a young squad and they’re maturing.
“Compare Alfie Bates from last year to this year, he started last year very well and came off a little bit. This year he’s been one of our best players.
“The boys are maturing and that’s how it will be with young lads. They are learning their trade.
“All the lads are working hard every day to get there (the play-offs).
“We’re not there yet but from what I see in training every day, I believe the players can do it.”
The skipper has recently returned from injury after a spell on the sidelines and has revealed he suffered a hamstring tear.
“I had a slight tear in my hamstring, unfortunately,” he added.
“We’re all ready and raring to go now, feeling fit.
“Especially with the patch we’ve had in the last month, it was even more frustrating watching some of the games and not being able to have any involvement or input on the pitch.”
