The Saddlers bowed out of the competition with a 1-0 loss to Oxford on Tuesday night but Rose – currently No.2 behind Liam Roberts – impressed.

Signed in the summer on a permanent basis from Southampton after being on loan at the Banks’s last season, he made a series of fine saves.

And Rose is eager to show what he can do in League Two as he said: “That’s what everyone here wants to do, to play as many games as they can. Whenever the gaffer calls on me to play, I’ll be ready.

“I haven’t played as much as I want to, but whenever the gaffer wants me to play, I’m there and I want to play.

“Me and Robbo get on really well and push each other hard. It’s just a healthy goalkeeper relationship.

“Robbo knows I’m after game time, and he knows he has to perform well to stay in the team.”

Walsall take on bottom-of-the-table Southend this weekend and Rose may get his chance with Roberts carrying a slight knock.

On whether the Oxford display boosted his standing, Rose added: “Hopefully that’s how they see it. I’m doing as much as I can, and the rest is down to the gaffer.

“All I can do is perform well and do as much as I can for the team.”
