Scrimshaw – on loan from Bournemouth – made his first Saddlers start in defeat to Oxford in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday. And Dutton was impressed with his work-rate as he said: “When we looked at him that was one of the key aspects we saw.

“We saw a player that doesn’t stop running and is prepared to put in a shift for the rest of the boys. That was key, bringing someone in that could mould to the group that we’ve got. Jake certainly does that.”

Dutton, though, knows Walsall now need to find a cutting edge up front.

“We’re going to have a little period now where we can get get some real solid work into the lads,” he added.

“With the amount of games we’ve had, there hasn’t been many opportunities to get some real coaching into the lads, especially on the attacking front. We’re looking forward to that little period now.”
