Darrell Clarke delighted as Walsall players step up
Walsall manager Darrell Clarke is delighted with his squad for stepping up while others are out injured to beat Crawley Town 1-0.
Long-term absentee Josh Gordon was joined on the sidelines by James Clarke, Danny Guthrie and George Nurse - who are also a doubt for the weekend.
Among the players that came in was player-coach Mat Sadler who, on his first League Two game of the season, netted to hand Walsall the three points.
“It’s a good win isn’t it,” manager Clarke said.
“Any win at any level is a good win. It was an end-to-end game with chances for both teams.
“It was two good teams having a good go and testament to us, we had four key players out of the starting XI tonight with injuries.
“I’ve said it all along, this season will be more of a squad game than any other season. They applied themselves very well.
“They’re on a run of four wins from the last five so we knew we were in for a real tough test.
“We kept digging in and got the goal from a set piece which is nice, we need to score more from set pieces.
“And the old boy Mat Sadler, my player-coach, has got the winner.”
