Darrell Clarke pleased with 'battling' Walsall point
Walsall manager Darrell Clarke was pleased with his side’s response as they battled for a point against Colchester United.
Following a poor performance against Forest Green Rovers last week, the Saddlers bounced back with an impressive display and had the opportunities to take all three points - as the game ended 1-1.
Although the display from his side was much improved, Clarke is still after more as he wanted the win.
“I’m a lot more pleased with the performance than I was last week, if we play that game again we win the game,” Clarke said.
“We have to be a little bit more ruthless at both ends of the pitch, still plenty to work on, but I thought some of our football was very good.
“Good connections over the pitch, a handful, always trying to win the game, so something to build on.
“We work loads of different patterns and try and give teams other things to think about. Being very respectful of Colchester as well because they can hurt you on the counter attack, they have plenty of pace in the team.
“They got their goal on the counter attack with a bit of slack play from ourselves.
“In general, pleased with the performance but disappointed with only a point.”
Star forward Josh Gordon was forced off just before half-time with an injury to his right knee and although Clarke insists they do not know the extent of the injury, he admits he is concerned about it.
“It’s too early to assess, so we’re a little bit concerned with that,” Clarke added.
“Josh is a big player for us, so we’ll get it assessed and hopefully it’s not as bad as it first looks.”
