Walsall contract talks ongoing with midfielder Danny Guthrie
Walsall and Danny Guthrie are still locked in negotiation talks over a new contract, the Express & Star understands.
The veteran midfielder was offered a new deal in June, alongside Callum Cockerill-Mollett, Tom Leak, Sam Perry and Joe Willis – and he remains the only player yet to sign on the dotted line.
The club also exercised their option to keep hold of Alfie Bates, Elijah Adebayo and Mat Sadler – who took on a player/coach role – in their retained and released list.
Guthrie made 28 appearances for the Saddlers in his first season, last year, and proved his quality in the middle of the park.
He did, however, suffer from several injuries throughout the campaign, with a hamstring injury and a recurring hip problem holding him back.
Despite that, Walsall still chose to offer the former Liverpool player a new deal. It's understood that, although they are yet to come to an agreement, the club is hopeful of getting the 33-year-old signed up for next season.
The Saddlers also have time on their side, with no date set for the start of the 2020/21 League Two season, meaning they will be in no hurry to come to a conclusion with Guthrie.
