D-day for the lower leagues
Walsall’s League Two season is in doubt as an EFL board meeting takes place today.
Many expect that EFL chiefs will call a halt to League One and League Two this week, with talks expected to last throughout the week.
Reports have suggested that clubs in the lower two divisions of the Football League will vote on ending the season now and how to determine relegation and promotion.
It is believed that Walsall have not been informed of a vote, or any plan to end the season, ahead of today’s scheduled meeting.
Following the board meeting today, representatives from League Two clubs will join a conference call on Friday.
Plans are in place to restart the Premier League, and with the Championship position still unclear, it’s understood to be safer in the long term for clubs in League One and League Two not to finish the season.
Although the government gave the green light for sport to return from June 1, League Two would need to resume no later than June 6 to fit into the EFL’s 56-day plan to finish the season.
Also, playing behind closed doors would pile another financial burden on League Two clubs and with several teams already releasing players – while many more are out of contract on June 30 – finishing the season now seems unlikely.
Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart believes a decision is likely this week after the planned meetings.
“The EFL are meeting on Wednesday-Thursday, we are led to believe something will come out of that,” he said.
“I have got doubts, it will be very difficult to restart. I don’t see League One and League Two starting.”
