Wes McDonald signs new 18-month Walsall contract
Walsall winger Wes McDonald has penned a new 18-month deal with the Saddlers.
The 22-year-old's six-month contract was due to end after the Cheltenham fixture on Saturday but with less than a week to go the fan-favourite forward has now agreed terms with the club.
McDonald has scored five goals in 24 appearances this season and has started each of Walsall's last 13 matches in all competitions.
He's had a hand in seven goals in his last eight games for the Saddlers and the former Birmingham academy product is 'delighted' to have signed the new deal.
“I’m delighted to get the deal done,” he said.
“I feel at home here like I’ve said in the past and I’m very grateful for the club for putting their trust in me and I’m really happy to get it sorted.
“It’s about cracking on now that I have signed my deal.
"I am very happy that it is all sorted and that everything is done.
“I just want to get back out there on the pitch and continue pushing up the table and keep helping the team.
“I’ve been working really hard since I joined the club and I’m trying to add numbers to my game.
“Every time I’m on the pitch I’m always trying to help the team out whether that be creating a chance for my teammates or scoring a goal and I just want to continue doing that.
“I’ve said it before, the fans are brilliant with me and with the team, they’re always getting behind us. I just want to keep showing them what I can do and I want to continue helping the team push on.
The club have been negotiating with McDonald since November with manager Darrell Clarke keen to get the deal done and the 42-year-old believes the winger has great potential.
“We’re pleased to get the deal done,” Clarke said.
“He’s become a fan favourite at the club and we’re looking forward to working with him.
“There are areas he can improve but if he continues to do so then we’ll have one hell of a player on our hands.”
