Walsall striker Josh Gordon isn't worried about the club bringing in new forwards in the January transfer window as he vows to fight for his place.

Manager Darrell Clarke revealed last month that he was targetting 'forward thinking players' as he aimed for 'three or four' additions to his squad.

But Gordon, who has now scored seven goals in all competitions this season, says he plans to keep doing what he's doing, rather than worrying about new strikers coming to the club.

"I don't tend to think about it to be honest," he said.

“Football’s all about competition.

"People come in but you’ve got to keep doing your job and if you keep doing your job, you’ll keep your place.

"I think what I've been doing of late, I've been playing more and shown what I'm capable of doing.

"I've been scoring goals and that's all I can do, I have to continue doing what I've been doing.

"If someone else comes in I'll still have to keep doing what I'm doing to claim my place.

"We need more depth in the squad when it comes to forward players.

"There's some areas where we need a couple more so we can look at the squad and have back-ups.

"That will help us progress to where we need to be.

"If they're bringing players in who are going to add to the team and add a bit more quality then it's nice to see fresh faces."

Meanwhile, manager Darrell Clarke has said talks are still ongoing over a new contract with Wes McDonald.

The 22-year-old, who signed a short-term contract in the summer, is expected to be a free agent by mid-January if he fails to sign new terms with the club.

Negotiations have been ongoing since November and Clarke insists they want to keep the forward.

"We've been in talks with Wes and he's a player we don't want to lose," he said.

"It's as simple as that.

"We can do what we can do as a football club, that's with any player.

"I've made plenty of money in transfers in all three clubs that I've managed, we've always been in profit.

"That's how we run our football club, we'll do what we can and we obviously want to keep our best players.

"So we'll see."
