A Pierce Sweeney own goal and goals from Caolan Lavery and Josh Gordon had the Saddlers 3-0 up within 30 minutes against the division’s second placed team.

But Exeter fought back with two goals before half-time from Ryan Bowman before Lee Martin equalised in the second half.

And Clarke was understandably disappointed after the final whistle.

“We’re obviously disappointed,” he said.

“Let’s not kid ourselves, we were 3-0 up.

“We have to give Exeter credit, that’s why they’re in the top seven.

“We get ourselves in a very healthy position and then our defending at the back end of the first half was shocking.

“We re-grouped at half-time.

“I thought the tactical change helped the team in all honesty.

“Their third goal comes from a little bit of fortune and we’re in it all the way with chances at the end of the game.

“We appreciate the fans coming down a long way, great support again today.

“We’re disappointed not to get the three points.”
