In front of 1,005 fans at St Andrew’s, both teams picked up their first point in Group D.

But it was the Sky Blues who grabbed a bonus point after they won the subsequent penalty shoot-out.

The result extended Walsall’s winless run to seven matches.

But Stewart felt their lots of encouraging signs heading into Saturday’s clash at Colchester.

“We probably should have won the game,” he said.

“Their keeper has had to make far more saves than ours did. But it is a new group, they are still getting to know each other.

“Defensively we are doing great.

“But we need to start scoring goals, we know that.

“Because we aren’t getting results, everything is up for grabs.

“But there were one or two who came into the team and did great.

"We have had a new striker come in, Rory Gaffney.

“We have to work with them to get them going. But there have been plenty of positives, the guys have shown the non-negotiables - team spirit and hard work for the team.

“Off the back of those things you can build.”
