Gary Liddle: Walsall have to start winning soon

Midfielder Gary Liddle says he agrees with manager Darrell Clarke that the honeymoon period for Walsall’s new-look side is over.

The Saddlers, who were relegated from League One last season, have undergone the biggest transformation of all the 92 clubs in the Football League with 23 players departing and 15 arriving this summer.

Alongside that squad overhaul, Clarke was appointed manager in May while Leigh Pomlett completed a shock takeover of the club back in July.

But while all those changes led to a wave of optimism engulfing the Banks’s Stadium, they have also led to the Saddlers making a slow start to the new campaign – with Clarke’s men having taken just five points from their first five games.

And following of run of five matches without a win, Liddle admits fans are now at the point where they want to see their team winning games.

“The honeymoon period is certainly over,” the 33-year-old said. “It was never going to be a quick fix, the fans are realistic – they know that.

“But at the same time it’s about winning games, five points from five games is not acceptable with the squad we have got and the quality of player we have got. We know that.

“I know we’re all new but the manager has said we’ve got to quickly learn each other’s games and how we all play.

“The quicker we do that, the better because it’s unforgiving this league.”
