Luke Leahy: Walsall in good spirits, but feet on the ground

Luke Leahy says it’s far too early to suggest the tide has turned at Walsall – despite the players being in good spirits.

A disastrous run of form from December through to February saw the Saddlers pick up just one win from 12 matches.

That has seen them plunged into a relegation scrap in League One, with Dean Keates’ side currently sat 20th in the table.

But results and performances have improved in the past fortnight with an incredible 10-man win over Bradford following by solid draw at Burton.

“If we play like we have in the last two games then we will be fine,” Leahy said.

“But it’s far too early to suggest the tide has turned.

“The dressing room is a positive place at the moment.

“Training has been a lot different over the past few weeks. It’s been a lot more enjoyable.

“Everyone has got a smile on their face and, looking at us, you wouldn’t think we are in the position we are in.

“But we are well aware of our position in the table.

“Now we have two home games, starting with Fleetwood tomorrow and then Portsmouth on Tuesday.

“If we win both of those maybe we can then say the tide has turned.”

Fleetwood visit the Banks’s Stadium tomorrow’s still in with an outside chance of finishing in the play-offs.

Joey Barton’s men enter the game having won their last three matches on the road.

But Leahy believes Walsall have enough to win the game.

“Fleetwood are a good side, they have got pace and a real attacking threat,” the full-back continued.

“But we have shown a lot of character over the past few games.

“Against Bradford, we scored three times with 10-men, that shows we can score goals.

“And the clean sheet at Burton last week was massive.

“They didn’t create too many chances, certainly not clear-cut ones.

“We had to make a few blocks but most of their attempts were from distance.

“If we play like we have in the last two games I believe we will get the three points tomorrow.”
