The 32-year-old has been snapped up by manager Dean Keates on the first day of the January transfer window and is a direct replacement for Josh Ginnelly who has now completed his move to Preston North End.

Jarvis, a one-time England international, has made over 400 career appearances and played in the Premier League for Wolves, West Ham and Norwich.

The forward, who once cost West Ham in excess of £10 million, has struggled with injuries over the past few years.

But he is now fit with Keates hailing his arrival as a big coup for the club.

“It’s a massive coup for the club,” Keates said.

“Matt is a fantastic player, someone who has Premier League quality and has done really well in the Championship.

"With Josh moving on, we identified this as a position to strengthen and Matt brings an immense amount of quality and experience.

“His quality will shine through in this division and we’re confident he will hit the ground running.

“He has fantastic ability and a very good end product. He also adds a little bit more experience to the squad having played in the top two divisions.”

Middlesbrough-born Jarvis started his professional career with Gillingham, scoring 16 goals in 122 matches for the Gills and earning a place in the 2006/07 PFA League One Team of the Year.

Joining Wolves in June 2007, he helped them win promotion to the Premier League as champions in 2008/09 and was crowned their Player of the Year for 2010/11.

He won his only England cap in March 2011, coming on as a substitute in an international friendly against Ghana at Wembley.

Jarvis moved to West Ham for £10.75m the following year and made 78 top-flight appearances across a three-year spell with the Hammers.

The wideman completed a £2.5m switch to Norwich in September 2015 and featured 21 times for City in all competitions.
