After a blistering start to the season, the Saddlers endured a run that saw them lose four out of five matches in League One.

But they got back on track by beating Coventry in the FA Cup before then putting in a resolute display in the goalless draw at Fleetwood last weekend.

And heading into today’s clash against Sunderland, Ginnelly feels the team is beginning to recapture it’s best form.

“We have done well in the last two games,” he said.

“We got a good win against Coventry – it was important we got that after the spell we had.

“Then we went to Fleetwood and got a draw away from home which is a positive.

“We are picking up form again now. We had a little drop. But we are working hard on all the things we need to.

“We have gone back to basics. We didn’t feel as though we did the basics well enough in the games we lost.

“We are a team that likes to play on the front foot and work hard for one another. We have got that back now so it’s exciting times.”

After taking on Sunderland today, Walsall travel to take on league leaders Portsmouth on Tuesday before then hosting the Black Cats again in the FA Cup next weekend.

Keates’s side will go into all three games as underdogs.

But Ginnelly says that doesn’t bother them.

“We know we are going into the games as underdogs but we like that,” the former Burnley man continued.

“There is no pressure on us. We are going to go to into these games and give them our all.

“And we know if we play as a team, if we do the basics right we have a chance.

“People are going to write us off the rest of the season but it’s what’s said in these four walls that matters.

“We back each other. We know what we have got and what fire power we have got so we are going into every game looking forward to it.”
