Walsall bring in Ben Purkiss
Walsall have re-signed defender Ben Purkiss on non-contract terms in a bid to assist manager Dean Keates both on and off the field.
Purkiss, who is chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), enjoyed three successful years with the Saddlers between 2012 and 2015.
A free agent after leaving Swindon, the 34-year-old is currently sidelined with a neck injury.
He will now undergo his rehabilitation with the Saddlers in a bid to get back playing.
But he will also help Keates behind the scenes with the defender also set to fill a scouting role with the club.
“It’s good to have Ben on board,” Keates said.
“He has a wealth of experience and is highly regarded at the club – both from the staff and supporters – from his first spell with us.
“He’s struggled a little with injury since leaving Swindon at the end of last season so he will continue his rehabilitation with us and will also undertake scouting duties.
“We’ll then see how things evolve over the season.
“He’s made over 400 senior appearances and is chairman of the PFA, so he’s an asset with a great affinity to the club.”
Purkiss began his career at Sheffield United before moving on to Gainsborough Trinity in 2003.
After four years in Lincolnshire, he moved to York before enjoying brief spells at Oxford United and Hereford.
He joined The Saddlers after being snapped up by Dean Smith in 2012 and made 73 appearances in three seasons before joining Port Vale in 2015.
Last season he made 45 appearances for Swindon.
“I’m delighted to be back,” Pukriss said.
“Walsall are a club close to my heart and I’m grateful of the opportunity they have afforded me.
“Whilst I’m not putting a timescale on my return I’m hopeful of recovering from my neck injury and believe I still have a role to play at a club both on and off the field.”
