Russell Martin made his debut against Wycombe

Former Scotland international Martin was snapped up by the Saddlers earlier this month with manager Dean Keates hailing his arrival as a major coup for the club.

The 32-year-old made his debut on Saturday as Walsall got back to winning ways against Wycombe.

As well as impressing on the ball, Martin also proved a vocal presence throughout the victory.

And Ferrier believes his experience will prove invaluable to the side.

“Russ brings so much experience to that squad that is what we’ve been crying out for,” said the striker..

“We need someone who has been there and seen it because we have got quite a young team. I feel like in games you can see sometimes we need an older head, someone with a bit of experience to help us over the line.

“I feel that Russ will bring that on and off the pitch, it’s brilliant to have him.”

Ferrier who deployed in a slightly different role in the win over The Chairboys with the 23-year-old asked to play on the left of a front three.

Prior to that the forward had operated alongside Andy Cook or a lone front man.

But he felt his new position allowed him to get on the ball more.
