Goals from Andy Cook and Isaiah Osbourne put the Saddlers into the ascendancy at the Banks’s Stadium with just 10 minutes remaining.

But a Luke Leahy own-goal gave the visitors hope before Dominic Gape then netted an own-goal himself to restore Walsall’s advantage.

The drama was not over though with Alex Samuel firing in during stoppage time after Scott Kashket saw a penalty saved.

But in the end, Walsall got over the line, with the result lifting them up to ninth in the League One table - two points outside the play-offs with a game in hand.

“I think for us the most important thing today was getting the result and getting the win,” Davies said.

“Certainly after the two away games we’ve had and the start of a run of home games, the win was the most important thing.

“We got ourselves in front and at 2-0 up. Andy Cook then has a chance where he goes one-on-one and misses that one.

“Then they get one at the other end and you are thinking it could spur them on but it didn’t and we got the third.

“At the end, there are things that we can certainly work on but like I said before the most important thing today was getting the victory and the three points.”

Walsall handed a debut to new recruit Russell Martin against The Chairboys with Jack Fitzwater missing out through injury,

“Jack has taken a knock in the week and Russell has come in,” Davies continued.

“We know what Russell is about, he’s a leader, he’s been there and done it, he leads everybody, he can talk to everybody, he’s a calming influence when the game’s going certain ways.

“And I thought he was tremendous today for somebody who’s come in for, what, two weeks now and trained and not really played many games.”
