Trialist set to feature once again for Walsall

Boss Dean Keates will give his mystery trialist another chance to impress when Walsall host Villa in a pre-season friendly tonight.

The forward, who is understood to be Cypriot, has been training with the Saddlers for the past three weeks.

Walsall have so far refused to name the attacker who can play on the wing or in the number 10 role.

But rumours on social media suggest it’s Michalis Giorkatzis, a 21-year-old who played for Cypriot side Paralimni last year.

The forward scored during Walsall’s friendly at Rushall Olympic last week and then impressed against Stoke on Saturday.

And Keates revealed the attacker will play again tonight as the boss continues to weigh up a move for him.

“He did well against Stoke,” Keates said.

“He looked bright and sharp. He did enough in the Rushall game to extend the trial. And now he will stay with us for the next few days and feature against Villa.”

The trialist played up front and on the wing against Rushall but Keates doesn’t see him as a striker.

“He is winger – he can play as a number 10 or on either wing,” he said.

While the trialist is set to play tonight, fellow winger Josh Ginnelly is set to miss the friendly.

The summer signing – who also missed the Stoke game – has tendinitis and won’t be risked.

“Josh has a little bit of tendinitis,” Keates added.

“He’s had a chat with the physio and we felt it might be best for him to give the Stoke and Villa games a miss and let it settle down.

“He is not a major concern. In all the fitness tests we have done he has been flying, he’s a fit lad.

“But a few days rest won’t do him any harm.”
