Ray Graydon: Andy Cook could be pivotal for Walsall

Club legend Ray Graydon believes Andy Cook could become one of Walsall’s most prolific strikers.

The forward, who joined the Saddlers from Tranmere last month, has been in outstanding goalscoring form over the past few years. Cook netted 24 times in 45 games for National League outfit Barrow back in 2015/16 season. That form then earned him a move to Tranmere where he scored 49 times in 83 league outings.

And now Graydon – who twice won promotion as Saddlers boss – wants to see him continue that good form.

“It’s a big step up but I see no reason why Cook can’t continue the form he has shown over the past few years,” Graydon said. “He knows there the net is. And I think Keates will set the team up to get the best out of him.

“He will have had a conversation with him to explain exactly what he we wants from him and where he wants him on the field.

“He will be there to help him every step of the way.

“I know Keates thinks he can have a similar impact to Andy Rammell who I signed. He scored 18 goals in his first season with the club. But Cook could do even better if he keeps his confidence and has belief in his ability.”

Walsall have made three signings so far this summer – with Cook, Josh Ginnelly and Chris Dunn all arriving having impressed in non-league last year.

And Graydon believes Keates is smart to be looking at players in the lower leagues.

“When you sign a player from non-league, you expect them to be very excited to go into the Football League,” Graydon continued. “Players who come from that level are hungry and determined to grab their chance.

“It’s important to have characters like that in the dressing room.

“Keates needs to bring in people who are good players, but they also have to be good people. That is how you get success.

“It’s not easy to do on Walsall’s budget.

“But the talent in non-league is there. And those players usually have the right attitude.

“They want to listen and learn and become the best they can be.”
