Walsall chasing Tranmere's Andy Cook
Walsall are chasing Tranmere hot-shot Andy Cook, the Express & Star understands.
The striker, who netted 28 goals in the National League last season, is out of contract this summer and looks set to leave Prenton Park on a free transfer.
Cook's goalscoring exploits have led to interest from a host of clubs.
And it's understood the 27-year-old is one of the players Saddlers boss Dean Keates has targeted this summer.
Cook began his career at Carlisle and over the past four years has proven himself as a prolific goalscorer in non-league.
After netting 47 goals in two seasons at Barrow, he was then snapped up by Tranmere as Rovers looked for a goalscorer to fire them back into the Football League.
Cook netted 23 times in 44 appearances during his first season on Merseyside and then followed that up with 28 this year – including one at Wembley in the play-off final.
Meanwhile, Keates hasn’t ruled out taking ex-Saddler Milan Lalkovic on trial this summer.
The 25-year-old first joined the Saddlers on loan from Chelsea in 2013.
He then enjoyed a year at the Banks’s Stadium after signing a 12-month deal in 2015.
Lalkovic is currently a free agent after leaving Portsmouth.
He has recently recovered from an Achilles injury which ruled him out of the final few months of last season.
But while Keates stopped short of saying he wants to sign the winger – he said he may take a look at him this summer.
“He (Lalkovic) is a name that I have had put to me,” he boss said.
“He has been without a club since January so I have not been able to have a look at him live and, for me, that’s important.
“It’s a long time for somebody not to be playing.
“When we go through the course of the summer, we could have a discussion and there could be the opportunity to have a look at him in pre-season.
“That is the option I have have at my disposal.”
