George Dobson: We’ll save season for Walsall's fans
Fan favourite George Dobson believes Walsall have deserved their critics this season.
But while the overall campaign may have been a disappointment, the midfielder says the squad is determined to give supporters some joy by securing their League One status at Bradford tonight.
Dobson prompted wild scenes of celebration at the Banks’s Stadium on Saturday when his stunning 91st-minute goal secured a 1-0 win over Northampton.
That victory put Dean Keates’ side to within touching distance of safety – with the Saddlers needing just a single point from either of their remaining two games to guarantee survival.
And Dobson has vowed he and his team mates will give everything to ensure they don’t need to go to Fleetwood on the final day needing a result.
“We have had our critics this season and we have deserved them at times,” the former West Ham man said. “But the one thing you can’t fault is the effort of the team.
“The quality at times has not been good enough – we admit that. We can be better on the ball and we’ve made mistakes off the ball.
“But you can’t fault how hard we have tried every time we have stepped out onto the pitch.
“That is what got us the result against Northampton. We stuck to what we are good at. Now there are two games to go. We know we need one point to secure our safety. We’re going to Bradford and we are going to give everything to take the pressure off for the weekend.”
Dobson’s goal against the Cobblers ensured Walsall will also stay up if Oldham or Rochdale fail to win on the final day. But the midfielder says Walsall can’t be reliant on others.
“Northampton was great but we’ve come right back down to earth,” the 20-year-old added.
“We enjoyed the moment but ever since our focus has been on Bradford because we’re not safe yet.
“We have looked at the things we could have done better against Northampton and we will take them into tonight. We are going to do everything we can to put in a positive performance. If we do that I’m sure the result will come.”
