In what was an uninspiring and uneventful clash, it was the hosts who created the game’s best chances with striker Tom Eaves twice hitting the woodwork.

But while Steve Lovell’s side were the more adventurous, neither goalkeeper had too much to do over the course of the 90 minutes. And Whitney felt a draw was a fair result.

“I’m happy with a point,” the boss said.

“When we came to put the kit out this morning we saw the pitch was really lively.

“I wasn’t really expecting that and we had to adapt. We would have loved to have come and play our nice football but when you can’t you have to grind out a result.

“We were resilient and we did the basics well which is something Gillingham do really well at home.

“They make it very difficult to get the ball down and they set a really high press.

“But we played really well. It was a bit of a boxing match, it was quite even and I felt a point was a fair result.

“They have had a couple of half chances with some headers but I don’t think either keeper has had much to do.”

Whitney was particularly pleased to see his side extend their unbeaten run to four matches.

“It’s eight points from four games,” he continued.

“And we now go into Blackburn next week full of confidence.

“Gillingham are one of the in-form teams in the league. Eaves is playing well up front and we saw that.

“Josh Parker is a handful, we had to defend a lot of crosses but I felt we put our bodies on the line when we needed to.

“I thought the attitude and application from my players was really good. We go away now with a good point against a team that is in-form.”
