Assist king Luke Leahy: I’d rather have the Walsall points
Defender Luke Leahy says he would happily swap his impressive assist tally to give Walsall more points in League One.
The full-back registered his tenth assist of the campaign on Saturday but ended up on the losing side as the Saddlers fell to a 3-1 loss at Charlton.
That result meant Walsall slipped to within three points of the League One relegation zone.
And while Leahy has been pleased with his form, he would prefer the team is higher up the table.
“It’s 10 assists for the season which is brilliant for me,” he said.
“I like to get forward as often as I can. And to chip in with 10 assists and three goals already – I’m delighted with that.
“I have only been a left-back for four years. I have always been able to get forward, it’s the defensive side of the game I need to work on. I’m aware of that.
“If I can keep chipping in with goals and assists then it can only help the team.
“In the last five games I have set up Erhun (Oztumer) three times so he owes me a bit
“But I’d much rather we had more points on the board and more wins.”
Despite falling to their eighth away loss of the season on Saturday, Walsall created a host of clear goal scoring opportunities in their defeat at The Valley.
And Leahy believes the Saddlers should take encouragement from their performance against a Charlton side in the thick of the promotion race.
“It was a difficult result to take,” the former Falkirk man said.
“We went into the changing room and the manager told us straight away there was no need for our heads to be down.
“We played really well. We passed the ball when we needed to. We went long when we needed too.
“I think we picked up most the second balls and we created so many chances. But we didn’t take them.
“We were more than a match for Charlton. We will play worse than that and get three points – but that is football.”
