Blow for Walsall as James Wilson leaves

Walsall have been dealt a major blow after James Wilson was recalled by Sheffield United – with the defender reported to be closing in on a move to League Two Lincoln.

The centre-back joined the Saddlers on a season-long-loan from the Blades back in July and went on to become an integral part of Jon Whitney's side.

Wilson impressed in 20 appearances for the club. But his loan switch included a break clause in January which Sheffield United activated .

The Blades have since terminated the contract of 28-year-old by mutual consent – allowing him to become a free agent.

A statement from Walsall said: "Walsall Football Club can confirm that James Wilson has been recalled from his loan spell by parent club Sheffield United.

"The 28-year-old defender scored once in 20 appearances for The Saddlers after joining on loan from The Blades.

"The loan deal was for the whole season but contained a break clause in January, which Sheffield United have activated to bring him back to Bramall Lane.

"We would like to thank James for his efforts in the first half of the season and wish him the best going forward."
