Saturday’s trip to Rochdale is the first of four games for the Saddlers in a 10-day spell which could go a long way to determining their aspirations for the rest of the League One campaign.

Jon Whitney’s men currently sit 11th in the table, seven points off the top six and seven points clear of the bottom four. Defender Guthrie claims their sights are only set in one direction.

“We absolutely believe we can climb up the table and compete for a play-off place,” he said. “I think we have proven over the past few weeks we can battle with anyone.

“It’s just a case of grinding those results out and hopefully we can get back to that against Rochdale. There are a lot of games coming thick and fast. With a good couple of results we can really push up the table.”

Walsall host Bristol Rovers on Boxing Day and Rotherham on Saturday week, before a New Year’s Day trip to Plymouth Argyle.”
