Kieron Morris: Walsall must use win to push for play-off spots

Walsall have been challenged to use their confidence-boosting win against Doncaster to propel them into play-off contention.

The Saddlers ended a six-game winless streak in all competitions with a 3-0 victory at the Keepmoat Stadium last weekend, easing pressure on boss Jon Whitney in the process.

It means Walsall are now closer to the play-offs than the relegation zone in terms of points.

Thanks to a congested League One table, they are just four points off sixth despite remaining in the bottom half.

Winger Kieron Morris, who wrapped up the game on Saturday with Walsall’s third goal, reckons it could be the turning point of their season.

And he hopes it gives them the confidence to go on a run that will swiftly put them in the play-off picture.

“It’s been frustrating,” admitted Morris. “Even though we had put in good performances before Doncaster, we had drawn four games in a row.

“To get a win, everyone was buzzing in the changing room. It was a great feeling for the lads.

“It’s now four points off the top six. That is what we need to be doing, pushing towards the play-offs. And being only four points off shows how tight this league is.

“We need to go again next Saturday, put in another good performance against Southend and see where it takes us.

“Winning 3-0 is massive boost for everyone and we will take that into the next game.”

Morris reckons one of the catalysts behind a surge in form could be Amadou Bakayoko.

The striker has only scored two league goals so far this season and hasn’t found the net in his last seven outings.

But Morris is confident the 21-year-old will hit a purple patch after he laid on the assist for his goal in Doncaster.

“I thanked him at the end for my assist,” he said. “He has been a bit frustrated recently because he hasn’t scored in the past few games.

“But it will come because he keeps putting in performances and he keeps working hard for the team. They will definitely come for him.”

Tyler Roberts and Shaun Donnellan, who are both on loan from Albion, will be at the West Bromwich Building Society in Walsall town centre for a signing session at 2.30pm today.
