Jon Whitney calls on Kieron Morris to provide more goals for Walsall

Boss Jon Whitney has challenged Kieron Morris to become a more consistent goal threat for Walsall after the winger opened his account for the campaign.

Morris’s strike in last Saturday’s 3-0 win at Doncaster was his first goal since April.

Whitney has revealed the 23-year-old was a doubt to feature at the Keepmoat Stadium after picking up an injury in last week’s 1-1 draw against MK Dons.

But having got off the mark from the campaign after coming off the bench, Whitney is hoping the academy product can quickly add to his tally.

“It was nice to see him get his first of the campaign, we have always said Kieron can get more goals and hopefully that was the first and there will be more to come,” said Whitney.

“He had been carrying a little bit of a knock from last Tuesday at MK Dons and we were unsure whether or not to put him in the squad.

“He couldn’t really open up because he stretched the tendons on the top of his foot.

“But he is a dangerous players and he looked after it really well which was really pleasing for me. He was a danger on transition.”

Victory at Doncaster has lifted the mood at the Banks’s Stadium after a six-game winless run which had seen pressure on Whitney steadily increase.

The manager is determined for his team to now follow-up that success when they host Southend on Saturday.

Paul Brown’s Shrimpers sit a place and a point above the Saddlers in the League One table in 13th position.

Whitney said: “We are confident. Some of the play we have had in training has been outstanding.

“Some of the energy last Thursday and Friday made it difficult for me to pick a team at Doncaster. Everyone is fighting.”

Supporters have the chance to meet loan stars Shaun Donnellan and Tyler Roberts at a signing event in Walsall town centre tomorrow.

The duo, who are on loan at the Banks’s from Albion, will be at West Bromwich Building Society on Bridge Street between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
