The Saddlers captain reached the milestone in the away game at Wigan Athletic and is also rapidly approaching his 300th appearance for Walsall.

The shirt was signed by manager Jon Whitney and all of Chambers' Banks Stadium team-mates.

“Obviously I’m not one for personal recognition or achievements, but it’s nice to look back and see the games I’ve played,” said Chambers, who started off his career at Albion.

“I really appreciate the recognition from my team-mates, the manager, the club and the supporters - it really means a lot.

“Since I came to the club the fans have backed me and I’ve just tried to give my all every time I’ve played.

“I would just like to say thank you to everyone at the club involved in arranging this."

Manager Jon Whitney presented Chambers with the shirt and believes his captain could continue his career for a good while yet.

“That sort of achievement (reaching 500 games) is going to become a bit of a rarity going forward,” said Whitney.

“I think when you look at some of the energy levels he plays with, it’s a credit to him and his professionalism.

“He’s still as enthusiastic in his 500th game as he was in his first and that’s the key, for me.

“He’s a role model and an ambassador - it’s no coincidence that he’s still playing now.

“You have to do it right - live and breathe football - and that’s why we gave him a two-year contract in the summer. He could play to 40 and beyond.”
