Luke Leahy: Walsall out to end Shrewsbury Town's run
Defender Luke Leahy admits Walsall would like nothing more than to end Shrewsbury's unbeaten start to the season.
The Shropshire side head to the Banks's Stadium tomorrow sitting top of League One following a remarkable run that has seen them win nine and draw two of their opening 11 games.
It means Paul Hurst's men are the only unbeaten side left in the Football League – with Manchester United and Manchester City the only other unbeaten teams in England.
Walsall though enter tomorrow's game having not lost a league fixture against their West Midlands rivals in 24 years. Jon Whitney's men are also unbeaten at home this season.
"Shrewsbury is a massive game for us," Leahy said.
"Every game is big. But this is the derby. And the run they are on – nothing would be better than to end it by inflicting their first defeat of the season.
"They were close to relegation last year. Paul Hurst has come in and done a brilliant job.
"But we want to give our fans the three points and the bragging rights."
Leahy believes Walsall can enter tomorrow's game with confidence due to their impressive form at home.
"We have been really good at home this year," he continued.
"Shrewsbury will know how strong we are at the Banks’s.
"It's difficult to know why we've been stronger home than away.
"We prepare the same for every game and go into every game looking to win it.
"But we do seem to play more football at home. We are more expressive.
"I'm sure that will be the case on Saturday because we're determined to keep this unbeaten run at home going."
After a stop-start campaign so far, Leahy accepts the challenge for Walsall is to find a greater consistency.
"We have got to be more consistent," the 24-year-old added.
"We had a good result against Plymouth and then went and lost at Bristol Rovers. Then we get a good result at Oxford before losing at Wigan.
"It’s about consistency and believing we are good enough.
"We have got to keep our heads high because there is nothing to fear in this league.
"With the exception of Rotherham we have matched everyone ability wise.
"But we need to put a run of wins together. If we can win three or four games on the spin we’ll be right up there.
"We drew against Charlton and lost against Wigan and we have ended up 16th in the table.
"We were 10th the week before which shows how tight the league is.
"We need to put a run together and there is no better place to start than against Shrewsbury."
