James Wilson 'desperate' for first Walsall clean sheet

James Wilson may be happy with Walsall’s start to the season – but there’s one glaring omission he’s ‘desperate’ to rectify.

The Sheffield United loanee has yet to taste the defensive joy of keeping a clean sheet with the Saddlers.

It’s a somewhat surprising statistic considering the praise that’s been heaped on the backline this term, but heading into today’s trip to Wigan, Wilson and Co were still awaiting their first shut-out of the campaign.

“We have been so close,” said the 28-year-old centre-half. “I think in four or five games we have conceded late. We had a last-minute penalty against us in the win over Plymouth. To be honest, as long as we are getting results that is the main thing. But a defensive unit we are desperate to get that clean sheet.”

Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Charlton brought up the 10-game mark of the League One season.

Daniel Agyei’s stunning late equaliser got them the point that left them 13th in the table, five points from the play-offs, but five points above the relegation zone too. So how does Wilson rate the Saddlers’ start?

“We have had a couple of disappointing results,” he said. “But overall I think we have played good football. We have played different formations and no matter what system we play we seem to make it work. That bodes well for the future.”

What has been a big plus for Jon Whitney’s side is an increased goal threat, with the young trio of Tyler Roberts, Amadou Bakayoko and Agyei all impressing.

“We feel we have got a chance of scoring whenever we play and wherever we play,” said Wilson. “Personnel-wise we have a lot of competition. We have seen changes up front and in midfield as well. But whoever seems to play, we always have a threat and we are always scoring goals.”

And on today’s clash with the Latics, Wilson added: “It’s going to be a tough game. They have come down and are doing really well. They have got a lot of good players.

“We need to minimise their threat but the boys are relishing that challenge.”
