Walsall sign former Wolves youngster Zeli Ismail on-loan
Walsall snapped up former Wolves wonderkid Zeli Ismail and Burnley striker Dan Agyei on a busy deadline day that also saw defender James O'Connor depart the Banks's Stadium.
Ismail and Agyei became the Saddlers' eighth and ninth signings of the summer as boss Jon Whitney swooped to significantly bolster his attacking options.
Both players moved to the Banks's on loan until January.
And Ismail is now looking forward to trying to realise his potential at Walsall.
"When I was at Wolves I used to look at Walsall and think 'I’d love to be there'," the 23-year-old said.
"It was local and I knew a lot of lads there like Anthony Forde. Sharpy (coach Ian Sharps) is here now and I played with him at Burton.
"I know what he’s about - and I spoke to the gaffer and we had a quick conversation. I’ve played against Walsall many a time and you could see the way they play and their philosophy - I want to be part of that."
On the arrival of Ismail, Whitney said: "Zeli is one that has always had great potential.
"He has raw pace. He came on again us for Bury and created their second penalty, which Mark Gillespie saved.
"He’s an exciting player - he can play out wide and he’s a natural winger.
"He’s local too and Ian Sharps knows him well from his Burton days."
The boss was equally pleased to snap up striker Agyei from Burnley.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at Coventry last season where he netted four goals in 16 League One appearances.
Agyei joined the Clarets for a fee of £100,000 after scoring 35 goals for AFC Wimbledon’s under-18 and under-21 sides during the 2014/15 campaign.
Sean Dyche edged out fellow Premier League sides Crystal Palace, Chelsea and West Ham to land the hot shot who can also operate as a winger.
"Daniel is somebody we’ve been tracking over the summer," Whitney said.
“He’s a really good addition and he’ll strengthen the squad.
"He’s got raw pace and power and he’s got goals in him as well.
"We're really pleased to get him on board.
"Both Zeli and Dan are really keen and want to be part of the environment we’ve developed at the club."
Meanwhile, O'Connor has left Walsall after having his contract terminated by mutual consent.
The 32-year-old hasn't featured for the Saddlers this season after being told by Whitney he was no longer part of his plans.
“I’ve enjoyed my three years at Walsall and I’ll take lots of good memories from my time here,” O’Connor said.
“I really want to thank the fans for all their support in my time here, and I wish the club all the best.
“I’m so happy to have had my family come to watch me every week.”
