Five potential loan strikers Walsall could consider this summer
Walsall fans are desperate to see their club wrap up their summer transfer business with the arrival of a new centre forward.
But with funds at the Banks's Stadium tight, boss Jon Whitney may have to look to the loan market for more fire power.
Here we take a look at five forwards the Saddlers may be able to snap up on a temporary basis.
Ivan Toney
The talented striker became the youngest player in Northampton’s history when he made his debut for the club aged just 16.
A total of 13 goals in 60 appearances prompted Newcastle to pay £500,000 for his services in 2015. But ever since the 21-year-old has spent his time in League One having enjoyed a number of successful loan spells.
Toney was part of the Barnsley squad that won promotion and the EFL Trophy in 2016.
Then last year he scored six goals in 19 appearances for Shrewsbury before hitting the same tally in a temporary move to Scunthorpe.
Lukas Nmecha
The Man City forward shot to prominence this summer after shining for England under-19s at the European Championships.
Nmecha netted the winning goals in both the semi-final and final as Keith Downing’s side triumphed in Georgia.
Now eager to go out on loan, the forward scored eight goals in six FA Youth Cup games last season and also found the target regularly for Man City’s under-23s.
Walsall also have good ties with City following the successful loan of George Evans two years ago.
Stephy Mavididi
The 19-year-old was the top scorer in Arsenal’s under-23 side last season before opting to join Charlton on loan.
A bright start saw Addicks boss Karl Robinson label him as a Premier League star of the future.
But his time at the Valley was cut short when he suffered a hamstring injury.
Now back fit and having spent time with the Arsenal first team during pre-season, Mavididi looks set for another loan move.
Walsall would have to beat off fierce competition to land him though with Charlton again keen and a host of other clubs also said to be interested in the forward.
Tyler Roberts
A player known to be admired by Walsall boss Jon Whitney, the Albion striker shone during a loan spell at Shrewsbury last season.
The 18-year-old scored four goals and laid on a hat-full of assists for the Shropshire side after spending the first half of the campaign at Oxford.
Tipped to go on loan to a Championship club by Salop manager Paul Hurst, Tony Pulis is currently running the rule over the Wales under-20 international.
The likelihood though is that he will soon be making another temporary move away from The Hawthorns.
Jake Charles
A free agent instead of a loan, Charles is available having been released by Barnsley at the end of last season.
The grandson of John Charles – who many believe to be the best Welsh footballer of all time – Charles was poached by the Tykes from Huddersfield in 2016.
But the highly rated youngster struggled to get going and failed to make a first team appearance at Oakwell.
Despite his lack of playing time, Charles is a regular for the Wales under-21 side and has previously represented his country at under-17 and under-19 level.
