The Saddlers kick of the 2017/18 League One campaign on August 5 when they make the trip up to Greater Manchester.

Whitney's men have already competed in friendlies against Kidderminster Harriers, Solihull Moors, Villa and Chester in the close season.

They are also due to face Albion, Lincoln and Rushall Olympic before the competitive action gets underway.

And Whitney says those games will coincide with the ante being upped in training as he bids to work on his players sharpness.

"In the friendlies so far we have had really good energy and the distances we are covering on the pitch are above average," Whitney said.

"We don’t get dictated to by sports science but it is nice for that to back up what we are thinking.

"But we now have two weeks to really sharpen up. We have not really done the explosive stuff until the middle of last week.

"We have two weeks of doing high energy stuff now.

"This is when the fun really starts and we tax the players."
