The striker netted seven times in 38 appearances for the Saddlers last season but admitted he was disappointed with that goal tally.

Jackson was part of the Walsall squad that spent the first part of this week at a pre-season boot camp aimed at inspiring the players to better themselves.

But even prior to the trip, the Canadian international was working to ensure he is in the best possible shape ahead of the new campaign.

“I hired a trainer and did a lot of work on my own to make sure I’m in the best possible shape for the season,” he said.

“It was more about a mindset shift really. A few things have been highlighted to me that I need to change.

“It’s just a case of going out and getting those goals now.

“I need to flick that switch and get scoring regularly.

“It’s important for a striker to get goals. Goals are what I’m about. There are a lot of strikers getting really good figures and there is no reason why I can’t be the same.”

Walsall’s trip to the Lake District saw the squad tackle obstacle courses, abseil down a cliff face and compete in swimming race in Lake Windermere.

That challenge was particularly tough for Jackson who has a fear of water.

But the 30-year-old insists the time away has only added to his mental toughness.

“It was a great trip and it was amazing what we achieved,”he continued.

“There were some big things for me, the swimming and abseiling down a cliff.

“The camp really focused on the individual battles you have as well as working with your team mates.

“I learnt so much and I’ve now got my goal target for the season and I am committed to getting there.

“I’m going to do my absolute best to get there. I’m really looking forward to getting started.

Meanwhile, Walsall have confirmed they will hold an open training session for fans on July 31.

The free event will take place at the Banks’s Stadium and will start at 10.30am.
