The 25-year-old put pen to paper on two-year contract at the Banks's Stadium last month despite interest from a host of other clubs.

Gillespie was offered an improved deal to extend his stay at former club Carlisle.

Rival clubs in League One were also monitoring the former Newcastle trainee.

But after speaking to boss Whitney and goalkeeping coach Cutler, Gillespie knew he wanted to be a Saddler.

"I spoke to a few different clubs and goalkeeping coaches and Carlisle as well," he said.

"But I felt I needed a fresh challenge because I had been there a long time.

"I wanted a move to test myself and playing in League One was a major factor.

"Then it was all about the environment Walsall offer.

"I spoke to Neil in detail about the way he goes about his work. The manager as well sold the club to me.

"I also spoke to lads that have played for the club and they all spoke highly of Walsall.

"It was early doors – perhaps half way through the summer – that I had my heart set on joining."

Having been at Carlisle for seven years, Gillespie admits it was tough to move on. But he said he is quickly settling into his new environment.

"The lads have been great and the staff as well – it’s been a really easy transition to come here," he added.

"It’s the first time I have really been with a new side but it’s been enjoyable.

"I’ve only been at Carlisle as a professional so at 25-years-old I had only ever played for one club.

"It’s a lot different but it’s been easier to settle in than I thought it would be. But that is down to the lads.

"Everyone has been so welcoming and we just want to get on and work hard because we are looking forward to a positive season."
