Chris Marsh: Adam Chambers deal key for Walsall
Club legend Chris Marsh believes it was imperative Walsall tied Adam Chambers down to a new deal.
The Saddlers skipper, who left Leyton Orient to move to the Banks’s Stadium in 2011, put pen to paper on a new two-year contract with the club on Wednesday.
Chambers remains an integral part of Jon Whitney’s squad despite turning 37 years old in November.
And with the boss having so far made four signings this summer that are all aged 25 or under, Marsh believes it was essential Chambers remained at the club.
“I really like the look of the players Jon Whitney has brought to the club,” Marsh said
“So far they have all been young and hungry players who all have a point to prove.
“It will be great to have that energy in the squad but when you have a lot of young players it is absolutely crucial you surround them with experience.
“For me, experience counts for so much in League One and that’s why I don’t think you can underestimate the importance of keeping Adam Chambers,” said Marsh.
“He has seen it all over the past few years and been such an important figure in that midfield.
“You need these players who know how to manage a game. The young lads who have joined will learn an awful lot from playing alongside Adam Chambers.”
Marsh is now hoping Whitney completes his squad with the addition of a couple of strikers.
And the Walsall favourite, who made more than 450 appearances for the club, wants the deals to be completed sooner rather than later.
“The squad is taking shape and it’s great that the four signings so far were all in made in time for the start of pre-season training,” he continued.
“I know Jon has said he is looking to strengthen up front and I think that’s where they are a little bit short.
“It would be great to see a proven goalscorer up there and for me they need to come in quick.
“I firmly believe you need to get the spine of your team together as soon as possible. Get them together and give them that time to bed in.
“Hopefully that area of the team will be complete very soon because you don’t want to playing about with it in the season.”
