Boss Jon Whitney had always acknowledged it would be difficult for the Saddlers to negotiate a deal for McCarthy, who proved a smash hit at the Banks’s while on a season-long loan from Southampton.

And the 21-year-old, who is out of contract at St Mary’s this summer, has joined the Tykes in a deal worth around £200,000.

Whitney is still pushing to bring in his first signings of the close season. The manager, preparing a second campaign in charge, is thought to be close to landing a defensive target in the coming days.
