Whirlwind year for Walsall youngster Callum Cockerill-Mollett
It was the year that saw him make his Walsall debut, earn international recognition and win a prestigous award.
Saddlers youngster Callum Cockerill-Mollett has enjoyed a whirlwind 12-months ever since making his first team debut against Grimsby at the beginning of the 2016/17 campaign.
As well as appearing for Jon Whitney's side for the first time, Cockerill-Mollett was also crowned the League One Apprentice of the Year.
The young full-back has also just returned from Slovakia after being named in the Republic of Ireland under-18 squad which contested the Slovakia Cup.
And the teenager admits it's been a year full of surprises.
“I feel I’ve had a good season," Cockerill-Mollett said.
"I didn’t expect to be named Apprentice of the Year for League One, or to be named in the Ireland squad.
“Playing for Ireland was something new but I really enjoyed it.
"It was very similar to football in the first-team - you didn’t have a moment’s rest and you’re constantly checking over your shoulder. I thought I performed quite well - we kept a few clean sheets out there.
“I played a lot and got a much different perspective on football."
Cockerill-Mollett's international exploits were closely followed by his teammates as well as manager Whitney and youth coaches John Ward and Graham Biggs.
“The lads were all really interested in how I got on,” added Cockerill-Mollett.
“Kins (Liam Kinsella) gave me a bit of advice, just telling me to enjoy it and show what I can do.
“John and Graham have been crucial. Graham picked me up in the under-15s and has been the key man for me.
“He made me skipper and kept me in with the first team.
"John Ward, since he came in, has been really great. He’s the link between the gaffer and the youth team. The manager has also been really good with me."
