Joe Edwards: Walsall determined to enjoy remainder of the season
Joe Edwards insists the personal pride of Walsall's players will ensure they end the 2016/17 season on a high.
With just six games of the League One campaign remaining, the Saddlers sit 13th in the table – 13 points of the play-offs and 10 points clear of relegation.
But while on paper it seems Jon Whitney's men have little to play for, Edwards says the squad is determined not to let the season peter out.
"We have got six games remaining and we are determined to enjoy the rest of the season," the 26-year-old said.
"We're a group with a lot of personal pride. I think the manager picks players and signs players because they have that personal pride and that will to win.
"We have got a changing room full of players that want to improve and they know that if they do let things slip they won’t be involved.
"As a professional you need to want to win every game and improve yourself.
"The gaffer picks these players because they have that mental strength.
"We need to show now over the last six games that we want to finish as high as we can so we can take that momentum into next season."
Walsall slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat at promotion chasing Bradford on Saturday – a result which saw them lose a third consecutive game for the first time under Whitney's management.
But Edwards feels a few minor improvements will soon see the Saddlers return to winning ways.
"Bradford was a tight, close game," he continued.
"I thought we were the better side in the first half and probably created the better chances.
"They were always going to have a bit of pressure in the second half and we didn’t deal well enough with the goal and leading up to it so that is disappointing.
"I think a draw would have been a fair result. But we know we need to do the little bits better.
"We are coming very close in a lot of games but just missing out with that final detail, that final pass.
"So we know we have got work to do but we are never being outplayed in games which is a positive.
"There are still areas we have to improve and we are going to do that in the remaining games of the season because we are still fighting to finish as high as we can.
"We want to play every game as best we can. There is still plenty for us to play for both personally and as a team."
